A Truely Good SCTBy D. GowThis is an excellent SCT. Before I get to pros and cons, let me take a moment to address the other two reviews. Amazon and most major on-line retailers will accept the return of a defective or damaged item and pay the return shipping and that is true for both manufacturing defects and shipping damage. Celestron does have a two-year warranty on these scopes and my experience with two nearly back-to-back failures of my Nexstar 8SE, is that Celestron does try to meet and in my case exceeded their stated 30 day turnaround time. The 30 days is clearly written on their site so it should not come as a surprise.After owning a Nexstar 8 for a year, I decided to upgrade. I selected the CPC 925 because I thought the CPC 1100 was too heavy. The CPC series has several advantages over the Nexstar. The twin fork mount and heavy-duty tripod are much steadier than on the Nexstar SE series. This greatly reduces focus shake and improves go-to accuracy. The 8SE go-to is quite good, once you balance the tube and learn to work with it. The CPC 925 is better by half, right out of the box. They share the same hand controller so the internal catalogues are identical and they use the same alignment procedure. The CPC has built in GPS, so unlike the SE series, time/date/location entry is not needed. But don't get the CPC for the GPS, it really only saves a few seconds when aligning the scope to observe. Buy if for the rock steady mount/tripod and the very accurate go-to and buy it for the excellent optics.I set up my 8SE, mounted on an older heavy-duty tripod, and the CPC to compare them on the same targets. I carefully aligned both using the simple Auto Two Star (I select Polaris and center it. The scope selects Castor and slews to it. I center Castor and push the enter button. That is all). Some faint galaxies not seen in the 8SE were barely seen in the CPC 925, but galaxies clearly seen in the 8SE had much better definition in the 925. Doubles were more nearly pinpoints with the 925. Just for fun I spent a few minutes along the terminator of the first quarter moon. The seeing was only fair, but was able to use a 4mm EP (530x). With an 8mm EP, the views were very good with both scopes, but again, slightly larger and more detailed with the 925.The 925 comes with a straight through 50mm finder that might not be in focus. It is focused by rotating the objective housing, something not covered in the manual. A reflex, red dot, or right angle correct image finder is a worthwhile upgrade. I have a SV F50 and a red dot.The included 40mm EP is fine, but you will want to get one or two others. I recommend something about 20mm to start. Owl Astronomy and others sell very good so-called super wide angle (around 65 degree FOV) EPs for >$50. A zoom in another option until you discover what works well for your eyes, in your night sky. I have been using it the past week and have viewed the Moon, Venus, Jupiter. Overall the optics are excellent. But there are a few issues, which had I known earlier I may not have purchased this scope.1. Celestron advertises that the scope can be used with 8 AA batteries. This is not completely true. The batteries drain very quickly and will probably not even last one viewing session (say 30 mins). 2. Without power the telescope cannot be moved along the azimuth (left-right direction). So you cannot use it at all.So essentially if you want to take this telescope out of the city to some dark sky location you have to buy a powertank (or maybe run it off your car). I would have liked a design that allows me to use the goto feature when I want it but still be able to slew the telescope manually, without power.Why do I still give it 3 stars. Well, Celestron tech support is very responsive (over e-mail). The telescope itself is excellent (optically). I have gotten very good views of planets. It has been a little too cloudy and light polluted (I live in a city) for me to try seeing nebulae.Details:The DC motors that slew the telescope are very sensitive to the voltage and current of the power supply. If you use the telescope for 20-30 minutes after that the batteries drain down and the scope becomes unusable (till you replace the batteries of course). Celestron tech support told me that they recommend using the battery only as an emergency back up!!! After doing quite a bit of research, went to a star party to solicit opinions, I thought this would be a good starter to get me really interested in practical astronomy (vs. watching Discovery channel and read books). I have had it for over a week now, while I am impressed with some of the stuff I saw with the scope, but I am rather disappointed with the standard package. The $1000 price should have included some additional essential accessories. I ended up spending an extra $300 on additional accessories and am expecting to spend another $300 for some of the nice-to-haves.PROS:1. portability - light weight (27lbs total with tripod)2. finder scope - not sure if it's standard, but the red dot in the finder scope, when aligned properly with the scope, works very nicely3. clear and clean images - so far, i've only been able to see the moon and jupiter, and plenty of terrestrial objects and the images are very impressive.CONS:1. standard included accessories suck!!! - a. low magnification eyepiece! the 25mm eyepiece gives you a total magnification of 60x. The only thing you can see clearly with any details is the moon. Jupiter, as big as it is, I can barely make out the details, although it's very cool seeing the 4 big Jupiter moon (hey, I am new at this, it was still exciting). DE-CON: Spent $110 on Amazon for a 13-piece accessories kit (Celestron) which includes a 2x barlow and a range of eyepieces and filters. This should really help with magnifications (I haven't received the kit yet). - b. NO AC adapter! Be sure to have plenty of 2AA batteries floating around. A brand new set (8 required) will last about 1hr+ with somewhat frequent slewing. I have a high balcony, with plenty of skyview, it would have been very nice to be able to plug the scope into an outlet to play around with it for a few hours before taking it to the field. DE-CON: Spent $20 an AC adapter and $50 on a Celestron 12V PowerTank (both from Adorama). The AC adapter is HUGE!!! Good thing is that I don't have to carry it anywhere. The 12V PowerTank does not have a detachable red flashlight, but it seems to work well providing power. - c. Image diagonal NOT erected! While the images you see with the included diagonal is right-side up, it's right-to-left (reverted). DE-CON: Spent $35 on an erected diagonal. OK, given that the included diagonal and the erected diagonal are EXACTLY the same in construction with the exception of the Amici prism, I am not sure why Celestron doesn't go an extra step for (probably) a few bucks more vs. $35+shipping. I know orientation is meaningless in space, but geez, now I have no use for the included diagonal. - d. NO carrying case! I can't believe that something this precious doesn't come with even a canvas carrying case. The cheapest case I can find is the JMI case for this scope and it requires that you use the same packing foam that the scope came in - for $160!!!. After pointing the telescope to a bright object, I pressed enter then I used the telescope hand control to point the telescope to a secod bright object on the other side of the sky. After pressing enter, I decided to point it at the moon, the most recognizable object in the night sky. After pressing enter, the hand control indicated to me that I pointed it at Vega, Jupiter and the Moon. That was just amazing. I then asked the telescope to go to Saturn. The telescope took off and after a few seconds stopped and placed Saturn right in the middle of the eyepiece view. Very nice scope, but please read about customer service.By R. BunchThe five stars represent my opinion about the scope. I'm a novice at astronomy, so I can't really make any comparisons. I can tell you, however, that this scope does everything I've ever read about it. I pulled it out of the box and put it together and it went to work just the way the book said. I've done some solar viewing and a little digital astrophotography. My major purpose for this scope is in the area of deep-sky astrophotography without spending multiple thousands of bucks. It may be a little overkill for a novice like myself, but I wanted a scope that I wouldn't outgrow, and one that is easy to accessorize. The only thing I can nit-pick on this scope is the motor drives on the mount. They work fine, but they make a little too much noise, and the sound indicates to me that the gear train is not high quality components. It does seem to run very smooth, though! And accurate, every time! If YOU take the time to accurately set it up and aim it, then IT will put what ever you ask for right in the middle of your field of view. The battery holder is a little tight on the 2000mah NiMH AA batteries that I bought for it, but since I plan to use the AC adapter I bought for it, that's not really a big problem. I wish Celestron had designed the bubble-level INTO the base of the mount rather than just leave it loose for the user to install with the double stick tape on it's bottom. I bought a larger level from an RV store and epoxied it to the top of the battery cover. It seems to be very accurate and my alignment seems to work every time. I recommend a good variety of eyepiece filters, a solar filter for the main aperture, a 45deg. upright diagonal, and several eyepieces to cover the range from about 4mm to 32mm. Zhumell and Celestron both offer good filter/eyepiece sets at very good prices here on Amazon. For the astrophotographer, there's a whole world of accessories to chose from for this scope, and this is where I learned just how bad Celestron's customer support is! A lot of accessories out there state they are compatible with the Celestron C8 and 8i scopes, but this 8SE is so new that it isn't mentioned very often. I was concerned about the differences in the three 8" scopes, so I submitted an inquiry to Celestron's customer support, asking for a description of the differences in the C8, 8i and the new 8SE scopes. After four days they closed my ticket without answering my questions, so I submitted another request. After 14 days there was no response. I called them and the fellow I talked to had to put me on hold three times for about ten minutes each while he went to ask someone for answers. Shouldn't they man the tech-support phones with people that know the differences in their own products? jack of all trades..By Section.99To call any SCT a jack of all trades is accurate, but to end that thought by saying that it is a master of none does not tell the whole story. For one thing, they really are masters of planetary imaging. There are other areas too, such as DSO observing, where, inch for inch, an SCT is very close to some of its rivals. Still other areas, such as wide field observing or focusing, which are commonly considered an SCTs weak points, are to a large degree corrected by the addition of third party fixes. A good 2" inch diagonal and a Feathertouch focuser make the C9.25 a true pleasure to use. In short, I don't see how anyone could be displeased with this telescope, even first-time scope buyers like myself. You may eventually want to add a refractor to the lineup, but I'll bet you keep the C9.25. The 9.25 inch has many advantages which I will try to describe below. 1. It is probably the largest really portable telescope for a one person setup. Most scopes ten inches or more in diameter are not as easy to transport and set up. 2. The scope has plenty of back focus. There has been enough for any attachment I haveever used including many different cameras, spectroscopes, flip mirror boxes, and even tunable wavelength filters.3. With proper collimation the optics provide diffraction limited crisp views of the moon and planets.4. Images have slightly better contrast than many other Schmidt Cassegrain telescopes.5. The mirror is large enough to allow serious deep sky photography.6. The OTA is easily balanced on a mount. 7. The OTA doesn't shake or vibrate much in a breeze.8. The OTA backplate accepts an almost endless variety of accessories. 9. The OTA is very affordable when compared with other similar telescopes.10. There was almost no waiting time between ordering the OTA and receiving it.11. The scope is easily collimated by adding Bob's "Knobs" or similar screws and it holds collimation well.There are also a few disadvantages:1. Dew collects on the corrector plate with ease and needs to be prevented from collectingor removed. 2. There is a lot of mirror shift when focusing which is an annoyance for solar systemphotography.3. The focusing knob is rather coarse and fine focusing adjustments are tricky.4. The finderscope is barely adequate and is difficult to adjust.Conclusions:This is a very capable and affordable telescope that is suitable for both deep sky and solar system photography and visual work. It is light for its size and is easily transported and set up by one person. The aperature is about the right size to achieve the maximum possible resolution allowed by the atmosphere on the great majority of New England nights. When properly collimated it provides diffraction limited views and it provides good contrast between the subject and background sky. It accepts an incredibly large variety of attachments and has plenty of back focus. Minor annoyances include its tendency to accumulate dew on the corrector plate, some difficulty in fine focusing, mirror shift, and a barely adequate finderscope. SimpsonAlthough I didn't purchase my CPC 1100 through Amazon.com, I wanted to add my two cents about this great scope.Like the first reviewer, I'm a visual observer only; don't have the time or inclination to mess about with cameras and laptops. I've also owned a few other SCTs over the years and really enjoy this type of telescope.First, it is a heavy telescope. The tube and fork assembly weighs 65 lbs. Make sure you can lift and maneuver something that heavy before ordering one! Although, the ergonomics of the carrying handles make lifting and handling the scope much easier than they would be otherwise.One feature I enjoy with this scope, and another computerized Celestron I used to own, is that unlike their main competitor--Meade--you don't have to do an initial motor calibration. With the Meade SCTs you have to "train the drive" before using the scope for the first time. That's a tedious procedure that must be done outside during daylight, in order to calibrate the motors and hand control. There's no such procedure with the CPC. The first time you set it up at night you're good to go!Now, I live in light-polluted Central Florida. This scope actually can show me some of the brighter deep-sky objects fairly well. Because it has a long focal ratio (f/10), with any given eyepiece you get a nice "close-up" view. This is especially nice when viewing the planets. My favorite objects to view with my CPC, however, are the magnificent globular clusters! Wait until you view M13 or M5 with a 24 or 26mm eyepiece! These objects alone make the telescope well worth it!I find the NexStar hand control menu very easy to navigate, once you practice with it. (And you'll be a "pro" at it your first couple of nights!) There are many nice features here as well: You can control the brightness of the red backlit keypad and display window. The scrolling display can be speeded up or slowed down. You can choose a particular constellation and let the scope show you a number of different objects located there. The "sky tour" feature is a fun way to sample various objects visible overhead. And there are other nifty features.Since I know most of the bright star names, I don't use the "Sky Align" three-star alignment set up. I use the "Auto Two-Star" alignment, which I find easy and quick. Also, you can set up the scope before full darkness and get it aligned if the Moon or bright planet is visible by using the "Solar System Align" method. Great optics, great mount, everything else is junkBy Happy ShopperFirst of all this scope is big. If you are hoping for something portable, this is not the scope for you. there are some really excellent things about this setup. For example the scope itself has great optics, creating pinpoint stars and showing great views of the moon, planets, open and globular clusters. And does an exceptionally nice job on splitting double stars. If you want to look at deep space objects such as galaxies and nebula, the 6" aperature does not have the power to see most of them. Also the mount is very good. when I first ordered the scope, I was concerned that the CG-5 mount would not be able to handle the heavy tube. But in reality, the mount is quite beefy and has no problem slewing the big scope around. Once the mount is completely leveled (critical), polar aligned, and aligned with three stars, it will very accurately place objects within the eyepiece for the rest of the night.Now for what is wrong whith this setup. On my first night out with the scope, I quickly realized that the scope was almost completely unuseable. With the tube balanced on the mount (critical for protecting the gears in the mount) the eyepice at zenith was about 2 feet of the ground. So unless you like sitting or lying on the cold ground, the best part of the night sky is unseeable. To solve this problem I was forced to buy an extension mount (orion skyview pro extension mount will fit the cg-5) costing $82. Do not the experts at Celestron not know that the scope can hardly be used at zenith and if so, why not package in the extension for the mount?Also the focuser that comes with the tube is a rack and pinnion type with very cheap plastic knobs. Its movement is very course and adjusting at high magnifications is very difficult. To fix this problem, I purchased an electronic focuser($72)with fine, shake-free movement. Other telescope companies offer as standard on their scopes nice dual speed crayford focusers. Why can't Celestron do the same?In line with the cheap focuser, comes the cheap plastic diagnol. I felt the need to upgrade to a good alluminum one ($70). The finderscope is just adequate. But again you are often so low to the ground, that it is very dificult to get your eye close enough to see through it. A right angle one would have been more appropriate. I upgraded to a red dot ($65). Finally the eyepiece that comes with the scope is also low grade. Other competing companies offer a mid grade eyepiece standard with their scopes, again, why won't Celestron?So in summary, I would not purchase this set up if I could do it all over.
